I'm so sorry you're sick! I love your writing though. I accidentally got sucked back into watching Supernatural, and there was an episode with a djinn, which caused such FEELINGS. Do you still watch it?
I don’t, sadly! I was obsessed with seasons 1-5 and then kept watching up until the start of season 9, at which point I was forced to accept that the direction they were taking the show in just didn’t work for me anymore. I still love the first 5 seasons and will rewatch them anytime, anyplace, but everything after that feels kind of vapid and directionless to me - like they keep coming up with cool concepts but never actually using them to any great effect? Seasons 1-5 aren’t perfect but the show had a good premise and they had a plan that built up to a clear, climactic finale with the apocalypse, and it feels like since then they’ve been trying to one-up themselves but it’s kind of impossible to one-up the literal apocalypse, so it all falls a bit flat for me u_u
The season 2 episode with the djinn always gets me though!! Dean was always my favourite so I love all his angsty episodes <3
Out of curiosity, which podcasts are you into?
Hmmm, how much of my horrible inner life do I want to share :D
I’m mostly kidding. My podcast listening is pretty banal, I think, but I’m always a little “hmm” about my true-crime listening because I think there’s a tendency not to glorify the perpetrator but to minimize the victim impact that I struggle with. But that’s really just a slice of my listening so here you go.
PREPARE FOR SOME STRONG OPINIONS.
Currently the only fiction podcast I listen to is The Magnus Archives. I fell behind in Welcome To Night Vale, and I always knew I would eventually stop listening because while I loved Night Vale, I also recognized its essential schtick wasn’t super variable. I love it, I’ve left it behind, I’m at peace with that, like a really good breakup. (Before everyone suggests Zombies Run, which happens every time I post about this, I don’t do zombies and I don’t do post-apocalypse, so it’s a hard no for me. :D )
True Crime: My Favorite Murder: “true crime comedy” as they describe it, which makes it especially easy listening for me since I’m more there for the comedy. Felonious Florida: serialized crime stories from the sunshine state. (currently on hiatus, I believe.)Someone Knows Something: serialized unsolved mysteries from Canada. (also currently on hiatus, I think.)Several limited-run shows that just finished a short series but may update in the future: Uncover: Escaping NXIVM, The Gateway, Death In Ice Valley.
Culture (really Misc): Ear Hustle: Broadcasting from San Quentin Prison, about prison culture, occasionally touching on the politics of incarceration. This is one of my favorites right now. Throwing Sheyd: Jewish Demonology, hosted by a very bouncy woman and her very serious husband. I really enjoy the demonology, but also the Jewish cultural discussions and also the fascinating tension between these two people who, while both delightful, I was SHOCKED to find out were married. The Allusionist: The origin of words! This is a relatively new listen for me, I’ve only heard two episodes. 99% Invisible: About art and design and its impact on culture. I don’t always listen to every episode and I’m not all that hot on the current “articles” series but when the show is good it’s really good. How Did This Get Made: Three comedic actors talk about terrible movies. I don’t like Paul Scherer, but I will put up with a lot for June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas. The Cape Cod Fun Show: a cheery morning-zoo weekly podcast about Cape Cod. I really like Cape Cod and I like hearing about it from locals. I don’t know if they’ll take a hiatus for winter but they haven’t so far! Sawbones: This is about medical history and often about quackery and medical weirdness. I’m thinking of unsubbing because I haven’t listened much lately; a friend of mine hilariously ruined it for me when she very offhandedly said “I like Sydney but her husband’s dumb-husband schtick drives me up the wall” and since then I can’t unthink it. (I’m aware of his other podcasts, but not interested in them.)
Food: Gastropod: I keep trying to listen to Gastropod but it’s very long and the host’s accent bugs me (no fault of hers, I’m trying to work out why, it just sometimes snags my brain) so I have to take the show in small doses. Trader Joe’s Inside: I’m considering dropping this because essentially it’s a longform ad for Trader Joe’s and like…you already have my money, Joe.
As anyone who has ever heard my strong opinions about Great British Bake-Off is aware, I don’t do well when food is discussed but not shown, or I would probably listen to a great many more food podcasts. :D
Politics: Democracy Works: Only when I feel able to channel my rage productively.Planet Money: I like understanding the economy but lately this is also a “only when capable” listen.
Work-Related: Stanford Social Innovation Review: Innovation culture. I listen to maybe one in every four of these when it’s relevant to my work. First Day Podcast: nonprofit/fundraising; as above, it’s relevant to my work on occasion but I don’t mass-listen.
Along the lines of all this, I would welcome recommendations for fiction podcasts in a similar vein to Magnus Archives, podcasts about Jewish culture, and true crime that maybe isn’t re-treading the same hundred serial-killers-and-cult-leaders that most shows do. Not that I don’t love a good cult narrative, but there’s a saturation point where there’s nothing new to say.
Thanks to everyone who replied to my post from last night. :D I kinda crashed right after posting it, hence the late replies...

Yes, i have this too! It definitely makes it hard to drive at night... I just assumed it was some kind of mildish night blindness... :(
Yeah it sucks, doesn’t it. :-/
I’ve gone and done a little poking to see what causes photophobia, and found two unexpected causes which actually seem to make sense: poor binocular vision and accommodation. I know I have focusing problems owing the vast difference in nearsightedness in my right and left eye, and it’s been that way for almost as long as I can remember the light problems, so maybe that’s something to be looked into a little more...

that sounds like photophobia, have you talked to a doc? cause you definitely need at least some kinda special sunglasses
My optometrist was the one who suggested the transition lenses actually, haha. I think I need to go back and tell him, no, they’re not cutting off enough light. [Maybe he should’ve prescribed Vantablack...]

This happens to me too! I tried sunglasses but it makes the dark stuff dangerously dark. Anti glare glasses were the best I could figure

Amber or yellow lenses may help. I have lenses with the blue protection coating, the lenses actually look purplish, & that's helped a lot for me at night.
esrescuer replied to your post “Augh, my eyes!”
You need amber colored lenses for night driving. I wear amber tinted glasses when I drive day or night, it cuts the harsh glare of light especially at night with on coming headlights.
I’ve heard of amber/yellow lenses, but didn’t personally know anyone who used it. That.... could work, maybe! I should ask my optometrist about them the next time I pay him a visit. Cheers!
superdividuus reblogged your post and added:
I have had a lot of issues with this. A few things I have noticed that help me: -Rather than transition lenses, get a pair of prescription sunglasses. Wrap around are the best for protection of sensitive eyes. Carry them ALL the time. I actually started using a purse/bag just for this reason. -Get a normal pair of glasses with anti glare coating for night driving. It is amazing the difference. -Keep glasses cleaner and microfiber cloth in your car. -Use the squeegee at the gas station as much as you can. Also, keep your wipers in good shape and wiper fluid full. That will help with the glare a lot. -Clean the windows on the inside of your car every couple months. -I also have learned to slightly look to the side when driving at night. Not a lot but just enough to lessen the direct light into my eyes. -As a FU to people who have their bright lights on behind me or trucks/taller vehicles tailgating me, I move my side mirror on the driver side out word and upward so the lights from their car hit them. People back off real quick or finally have the balls to pass. Hope this helps! Good luck and take care of your eyes!
Thanks! I do actually have prescription sunglasses - I’d been using them before switching to transitions, and the reason I went with the latter was because I hated having too many pairs of glasses. (That, and the prescription ones were nowhere near dark enough, even though they were the darkest lens the opto had). But wraparounds that go *over* my current pair... that might work. Also, I.... obviously don’t clean my windshield enough, LOL. Something that needs to be remedied. (I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned the insides of my windows....). [Also - flashing high beam idiots back with side mirrors is BOSS and I definitely need to try that.]
Out of curiosity, what random thing do you think people most commonly associate you with and think, "Copperbadge needs to see this"? Pigeons? Mustard? Owls? Puns? Sandwich definitions? There are so many to choose from that I wondered which is the quintessential one to you.
Puns, definitely, though I wouldn’t mind less of that, just because I think one should come to a pun naturally, they lose their essential glory if they’re forced. And people do still tag me with owls quite a bit, though I think I have seen every image of owls the internet could provide by now :D
Mustard, people are just starting to, but I think sandwiches now go to the isitasandwich tumblr, which is just as well, they’re much more professional than I would be (especially since my personal philosophy is that the correct question is not ‘is it a sandwich’ but ‘does it need sandwich’ because, remember, sandwich is not a noun, it is an adjective.)
With pigeons people like to razz me about it, but the only time I get linked is when the pokemon “have you ever tried to punch a pigeon” post makes the rounds again. :D

For the holidays, I was given a paint your own masterpiece kit. Basically it is painting by the numbers and even had a grayscale of the image you were supposed to paint on the canvas. Me, being me, decided to rebel from artistic instructions and paint my own piece. It was hard to do without sketching it first and definitely a challenge.
