S club Juniors/8: Then and Now Vocal Analysis, The Boys.
* I won't be doing voice ranges for when they were younger because they all sang around the same notes. Even though it's obvious to me that some had deeper tones than others or sounded better than others in certain ranges, in the risk of miscategorizing them, there's no way for me to classify them because I didn't study chidlren's vocal pedagogy. Also, I should note that, most (if not, all )of their TV performances were lipsynched but even then , it's still their voices that are being heard. *

IMO, I think he'd be more into singing if given the chance because i don't think he was a bad singer at all I mean they were kids, they weren't gonna have amazing voices unless they were born with it (She's Maybelline) but at the same time, I don't think he wasn't much into it. He seemed to enjoy dancing more back then and it showed because he was really natural at it, which is why he probably became a professional dancer.
Listen to: I Come Alive ( bridge before the last chorus). One Thing I know & I Just Came to Dance (second verse after first chorus).
Whenever Your Heart Beats (his voice is layered over all the other voices in the chorus, he also sings part of the second verse).
Rush (This song is my favorite from them, his voice is again layered on top of the second half of the chorus and he sings the second verse "Today you came.... up in flames". Looking back now I'm laughing at this line, they were like 14? 15? what did they know about going up in flames? lol )
Aaron Renfree- Now
Like I said earlier I think it sucks he didn't get to sing much because his voice gave me a "dramatic" vibe, like he'd be a really good broadway singer. I'd love to know what he sounds like now since he has reunited with a few of the other members, I'd love to see them again. For the past decade or so he's had a stable and successful career as a dancer and choreographer. He has choreographed for the X-factor and Britain's Got Talent and has danced for multiple acts included my favorites, the Saturdays!
Calvin Goldspink- Then
I don't mean to sound mean but his voice never really stood out to me in S club Juniors/8 albums. It's not that he didn't stick out in general, it's a matter of personal preference; he didn't sound horrible, he sounded good actually, but it was too "normal" for me. He was pretty consistent and remained so in their second album and last album (IDream). His voice got deeper by that time but he sang softly most times, I'm not sure if the production team wanted it that way or he sang like that on purpose, I couldn't tell.
Listen to: One Step Closer (sings 2nd half of first verse and bridge), Puppy Love, Together (second half of first verse), Turn the Lights On (second verse after first chorus), One Thing I Know (first verse), Dreamin', Welcome to Avalon heights.
Calvin Godspink- Now
I couldn't find a better pic.
I'd say Calvin definitely surprised me when I first heard "Don't Fail Me" a couple of years ago, I loved his voice in that song, it's so deep and husky and I was like "Damn, this boy grew up" lol. In makes me wonder, where was all of that hiding? what was wrong with their record label not giving them a chance to shine better? I love his voice now, it's so peaceful and emotional, I'd listen to him all day. The only problem I have with that performance is that he won't move his lips or his singing through his throat or something, that bothers the hell outta me lol- force of habit I guess. I've always learned diction was very important in singing in order for people to understand you, John Mayer and Nick Jonas sing the same way and it gets under my skin!! Uuuggh!! Anyway, I thought his career should have taken off a long time ago, he has the star quality but I can't help but feel like he doesn't have enough presence, he sounds good but doesn't look like he's into the performance (check "Bright Lights" below). Either way, I can't wait for him to put album out, apparently he has one coming out this year, so keep your eyes and ears peeled.
Voice Range: Baritone- Best Suited for: Soft rock, R&B, Pop
Listen to: Don't Fail Me, Bright Lights, Supa Swag, Take My Hand
Jay Asforis- Then
I loved his voice during S club Juniors/8, his tone was very different than everyone else and I could it was him instantly. He had a really soft vibrato and I could hear some sort of a "grungy" sound in his voice, although about the "grunge" thing I could be wrong.
Listen to: One Step Closer, Whenever You Are (Bridge with Rochelle) , I Come Alive (first line of song, first line second verse ), Together (fourth verse and first half of bridge), One Thing I know (third verse), Big Fun (first verse and adlibs throughout song), Back Off (IDream- whole song).
Jay Asforis- Now
With a voice like this, and that head voice, I'd love to hear a full album from him! It sounds like he's forcing some notes, maybe because of his posture? Does he have a lisp? But I can definitely hear that vibrato when he sang the bridge. Lawd help me! I couldn't find any more recent videos of Jay but here's an interview with two hot dudes from a 1 year 3 months ago.
Voice range: Baritone, maybe tenor (I haven't heard the full scope of his voice to determine properly). Best suited for: Pop, R&B, Soft Rock.
I would like to know what S club 4 is up today; has anyone filmed any of their performances yet? (SC4- Aaron, Jay, Stacey, and Daisy have reunited this year to perform some shows and here are their management's site and twitter:
