The Missouri Supreme Court has overturned a lower court decision that would have removed a question on legalizing abortion from the November ballot. The court heard arguments Tuesday morning and Chief Justice Mary Russell issued a decision a little after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The judges voted by majority to reverse Cole County Circuit Judge Christopher Limbaugh's decision, issued last week. The court ordered Tuesday that the question should appear on the Nov. 5 ballot. Amendment 3, which covers abortion, was certified by the Secretary of State's Office after thousands of petition signatures. The initiative petition that was used to get access to abortion on the ballot received over 380,000 signatures. The amendment would guarantee a right to an abortion until fetal viability.

Rachel Sweet with Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, the group that led the petition drive to get the question on the ballot, said in a statement the decision is a "victory for democracy and reproductive freedom in Missouri." “This ruling is a validation of the more than 380,000 Missourians who signed the petition," the statement says. "This fight was not just about this amendment—it was about defending the integrity of the initiative petition process and ensuring that Missourians can shape their future directly. The Missouri Republican Party called the decision "devastating." "This ruling marks the most dangerous threat to Missouri's pro-life laws in our state's history," the party says in a statement. "Make no mistake -- this amendment, bankrolled by radical out-of-state interest groups, is a direct assault on Missouri families and the values we hold dear."

In Missouri, the race for secretary of state has become a highly charged ideological showdown, marked by personal attacks and divisive rhetoric. At the heart of this conflict is Democratic state Rep. Barbara Phifer, who has responded forcefully to a recent attack on her transgender grandchild by Republican candidate Valentina Gomez.

Gomez, a 25-year-old real estate investor, has gained notoriety for her aggressive stance against LGBTQ+ rights. Her campaign, characterized by incendiary remarks and controversial actions, has appealed to right-wing extremists with messages starkly contrasting with Phifer’s inclusive vision. Phifer is a Democratic candidate for secretary of state. The tension escalated when Gomez launched a personal attack on Phifer via social media in June, accusing her of raising a “groomer” and suggesting she belongs in a nursing home. “You have a trans grandchild,” Gomez wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “That means you raised a groomer. You failed your children, and they failed your grandchildren. Also, you’re irrelevant and belong in a nursing home.” Her attack followed Phifer’s condemnation of Gomez’s campaign tactics, which include a video of Gomez burning LGBTQ-themed books with a flamethrower and another in which Gomez urged voters not to be “weak and gay.”

Attacks on children have no place anywhere on anything,” Phifer said, highlighting the moral and ethical implications of Gomez’s rhetoric. Phifer, who has lived and worked in the St. Louis area for 34 years, emphasized her role as a parent and grandparent. “First and foremost, I am a parent and a grandparent, and that’s going to be my primary responsibility in life,” she said. Phifer also highlighted the broader issues at play, criticizing her opponent’s lack of substantive ideas. “When you don’t have anything to give, nothing to add to a conversation, you just start throwing verbal bombs,” she remarked.

Federal court strikes down Missouri investment rule targeted at `woke politics'

A federal judge has struck down a Missouri rule requiring disclosure of “social objectives” in investment decisions.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal judge has struck down Missouri investment regulations that Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft had touted as way to expose financial institutions that “put woke politics ahead of investment returns.”

The Missouri regulations, issued by Ashcroft’s office, infringed on the free speech rights of investment professionals and are preempted by federal law, the court ruling said.

The state’s most prominent business group on Friday praised the ruling as a triumph for free enterprise.

The regulations “would have placed an unnecessary burden on investment firms – small and large – doing business here in Missouri,” said Kara Corches, interim president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
