tl’dr basically Jay and I have been talking about “ZeXalura” or, that one au he made ages ago where Yuma fused all three worlds together with his wish on the Numeron Code and caused it to change drastically, and then a thousand or so years later the new keybearer picks up the Emperor’s key to continue the cycle only to find a very odd “Astral” in it .. .

anyways since we loved (and still love) sticking Star Force and ZeXal together whenever possible we threw Solo and Subaru in the plot as a pair of Astral-Barian hybrids that constantly are stuck in a game of cat-and-mouse with each other due to their past lives in the Starforce universe, only since they don’t actually remember any of their past lives it just comes off as very flirty and ridiculous. Subaru himself particularly managed to develop into a plot-relevant character of his own - he’d basically been written as an “Astrian” (astral being with barian influences) phantom thief with a reputation for stealing ancient artifacts and returning them seemingly on a whim, while his true purpose is to copy them and study them for as long as possible to solve their mysteries before returning them, while Solo was a Barial (opposite, basically) chasing after him to take back his “stolen heart.” (it’s the mu metal. they don’t know that. lol). 

anyways i ended up posting these side by side with each other because it just interests me how not only my style’s changed over the years, but my sense of character design. the other doodle was just drawn on the spot after Jay gave me a theoretical image of him on one of those character creators (a gaiaonline one, i think?) and i remember just. struggling with figuring out how the different layers of his clothing worked because we had decided he was an astrian that would wear all sorts of layers of clothing to hide his barian-infused marks. 

but now? i ended up drawing not just one set, but multiple drawings to figure out each layer of clothing, and the marks of his body underneath. i figured out how and why i’d want to make his marks the way they were (a callback to the original Rockman fusion), as well as his different layers of clothing (we decided on different layers including both solid and thin transparent veils that, despite their voluminous seeming nature, end up being barely enough to cover his marks) and how that reflects in his new character. 

in the end, this really helped “Kizuna” solidify as his own character as opposed to being an “Astral-being Subaru with War-Rock influences since they’re merged together” as such. he really looks more like his own person now (which is good, because considering his circumstances he really shouldn’t be acting like “Subaru” at all). In the end, the Starforce references were supposed to just be a cameo, not actually something that drives the plot, so "Kizuna" could be a character on his own merits.

anyways, rambling. i’ll never really be a professional artist or character designer, but it’s interesting to see how even just a few years of casual practice can really change how one does something. there’s always room for improvement, even on a small scale like this!

I really don’t get why people keep insisting Kl//ance is canon when Lance’s voice actor already confirmed at a panel that Lance is straight.
