The 3rd place winner of the New You art competition hosted by @startshows.
JAY JANSEN is a sculptor from Seattle who is currently based in New York. By using found objects and discarded materials, Jay’s artistic intention is to draw the viewer close and activate all senses.
Her art exudes the notion of turning the unlikely into the unforeseen. Things like drain hair transformed into a beautiful pantsuit boggles the mind. Is it gross or is it stunning? Hopefully, all of the above.
How about 900 Fish Oil Pills glistening under the sunlight, but as one gets closer, the fish aroma ascends, dazzling the eyes and accosting the nose.
Try 100 Hairballs which is a series made of brushed cat hair formed into spheres to mimic hairballs, which in turn, finds humor in a new form.
Natural materials have always caught her attention like stones from the beaches of the Pacific Northwest, aligned by the inherent line made from sediment to create a wishing rock. This evolved into a 30-piece series consisting of 370 stones called “Wishing for a …” Each piece brings a new wish to the world.
Continuously hunting for treasured materials to question our reality of worthiness is always the goal and is the driving force behind Jay Jansen’s artworks.
