Okay, to tl;dr it:

Emi Nitta plays Honoka Kousaka in the first incarnation of the Love Live franchise

In early 2016, some gossip tabloid found a 2008 porno that they alleged starred her

It turned out that it was just someone who looked a lot like her (not helped by the video quality being fairly low), but the damage was done for the turbo-otaku

Cue the typical otaku merchandise-smashing tantrums on Twitter

To their credit, though, Nitta’s agency actually stuck with her throughout this whole debacle (Japanese agencies will often drop talent like a hot brick at the first sign of controversy), and there was a lot of positive support coming from the community as well. Ultimately, not a lot came out of it - her agency pursued legal action against the tabloid and the fandom did an unusual amount of self-policing in trying to curb the Otaku Bullshit. The first iteration of the Love Live franchise was already ending right around this time (including the seiyuu contracts), and she’d been moving on to some new projects anyway. But it was a close call that absolutely could’ve blown up into a much bigger shitshow had any of the parties involved acted differently.
