Honestly, The Politician has become so chaotic. Its characters' developments have taken questionable turns, and as usual, I can never tell if their writers wanna take various social issues seriously or just outright ridiculously.
But I think The Politician really delivers in its The Voter(s) episodes. While the rest of the series is so out-of-this-world, these episodes seem to be taken seriously.
Over the rest of the series, in the perspective of the politicians, it's all just so wild, crazy, and unbelievable. But in these specific episodes, we see things from the outside — in the perspective of the voters — we actually see something realistic out of this hot mess that the politicians have created.
Last season, The Voter was dedicated to the perspective of the out-of-touch citizen. He hears, but never really listens. He believes his vote won't matter because everyone else is in their own world anyway, especially the politicians. But there is clearly a point in the day where he almost feels someone can care enough to make a difference, and he can say something and be heard. Deep in the next episode, election results are revealed to be closely matched so the viewer feels his indifference mattered.
This season, The Voters addressed the generational differences in voters and how we need to be critical to get past the ambiguities of each side in order to obtain something objective. Each side struggled with the authenticity and motivations of the candidates they believed in. Immediately in the next episode, election results are once again *cough cough* closely matched, so the viewer feels that the voters' decisions really made a difference.
I think they accomplished that by really giving name, face, personality, and life to these voters who are on the outside of everything. It made it easy to feel as if they were ordinary, but real people who did make a difference with their vote or lack thereof.
