Marbles
The worlds going marbles. Everyone's looking out for numero uno - and that person happens to be the self. Greed isn't just accepted, it's publicly lauded - a greedy man, a selfish one, has his priorities straight and a strong understanding of homo economicus. Then kids come along. The kids in my class have been firmly warned against playing marbles in their Games Period. It's a school that firmly believes in holistic development, and that includes health and team spirit - children have to play a sport. But today while the rest of the class was playing a game called Kabbadi, two kids snuck off to play marbles. A third, Jayram, was with me. He has to spell out words to read them, and when he volunteered to put in some extra time to practice I couldn't say no, even if it meant giving up my coffee break. When the Principal of the school, Meenakshi Aunty caught the kids for bunking, she confiscated all their marbles. Seeing Jayram putting in the extra time, she decided to reward them and handed them to him. Jayram counted them gleefully. "22!" he exclaimed. "How many do you want?" Meenakshi Aunty asked, more to teach the other two a lesson than as a serious question. Jayram paused. I turned to leave, knowing how this would end. Life is like Pokemon - gotta catch them all. If you have a chance at owning more, take it. Especially since the school I teach in is for disadvantaged kids - children of migrant labourers and daily wage earners. What kid in their right mind would take less than 22? And then he handed more than half of them back to her. "Ten," he said. "That's all?" she blurted out, surprised. Jayram shrugged. "I don't need more than ten. I have some to play with and some to lose. But if the others have none, who will I play with?" I could have hugged him if I wasn't afraid of catching his lice. I learned so much from him today, and I'm supposed to be the teacher.
