Ravaged by a climate crisis, this is how the world ended: pollution, storms, heat waves — the slow murder-suicide of a species without equal at the top of the food chain. Magnetic fields. Solar flares. Laws of physics. The first magicians looked at a slowly burning planet and thought: stop. EVERYTHING DIED…
… AND SOME THINGS WERE REMADE. Resurrected colonies with smaller populations, planets with reforged cores set spinning again on the great tear made in reality. That is what magic is, after all. Magic is unreality made manifest. This is how the Empire of the Grand Trine — the original magicians, the new gods — was born. The problem, really, is that most people have to occupy reality. And in reality, space is vast, and dark, and dangerous.
Nobody remembers exactly when it happened — the first leviathan emerging from space, swallowing ships, attacking facilities. Monster, some people might say. Unholy. Eldritch. Terror. They are nameless things, eternal, hungry. Once upon a time, someone ripped the solar system apart and then tried to stitch it back together. These are the things that crawl out from the seams. This is the void, staring back.
