Jean-Jacques Lebel,  French Fluxus/Happenings artist, poet, translator, poetry publisher, political activist, art collector, and art historian,  lifelong friend & translator of Allen, Burroughs, Corso, snapped here at his apartment on Bd Raspail, Paris, November 1993.  

He was just a student when he met Allen and Gregory in 1957  and soon invited them to a party his parents were hosting for Marcel Duchamp.  In short order they made a bad impression on Lebel’s mother, who called them “Clochards” - tramps -  after Gregory vomited in the stairwell. When the  introduction went down, Allen got on his knees and kissed Duchamp’s knees, Gregory came prepared with a pair of scissors, and cut off Duchamp’s tie!  Duchamp’s wife Teeny screamed,  but to Duchamp this was pure brilliance!, exclaiming “ Ces’t tres Dada!!”  by the end of the party everyone was getting along.   They remained lifelong friends…

Следующий экспонат с рижской выставки No! Art. Градус эротизма накаляется. Работа без названия от художника Jean-Jacques Lebel. Untitled. 1963. Как сообщает Википедия Жан-Жак Лебедь - французский художник, поэт, издатель, политический деятель и учёный. Известен в первую очередь благодаря своей работе с хеппенингами, как теоретик искусства и куратор. Лебель является автором и участником первого европейского хеппенинга, который состоялся в 1960 в Венеции. В декорированном помещении задрапированный «труп» лежал на постаменте, который был затем ритуально зарезан «палачом», в то время как звучали отрывки из произведений французского писателя-декадента Гюисманса и Маркиза де Сада. Затем гроб погрузили на гондолу и «тело», которое было механической фигурой Жана Тэнгли, торжественно соскользнуло в канал. Одним из концептуальных направлений искусства Лебеля был эротизм. Который очевидно несколько порнографично отображает в этом коллаже. Наверное справа Жан-Жак отобразил себя пробирающегося или вырывающегося из под власти женского сексуального влияния. Рваная форма коллажа может и имеет какой-то смысл, а может просто хотелось есть и он изобразил бифштекс. Summer is quiet in the trade so I wrote a bit and when I was reading in the morning light the fruits of my labour, in the form of @tankmagazine #partynow issue banged on to the wooden floor with some odds and sods of #hermannitsch and two articles by me entitled #knowdrugsplease (title stolen from a great essay on the #lsdlibrary by OB) discussing two wonderful things I sold #juliomariosantodomingojr back in the day: #peterbrook 's copy of #jeanjacqueslebel 's #lehappening and the incredible trip diary of #joseluiscuevas #lsd #tripdiary from august 1957. Includes a beautiful photo, of an #isomerizer in front of the complete printed works of #timothyleary assembled by Michael Horowitz for the library, by #janeandlouisewilson . All now in the @harvard library system including @houghtonlib @widenerlibrary #harvardbotanicalmuseum #schlesingerlibrary @hlslibrary et al

I am working in Paris for a couple of months and Michael has asked me to talk to Jean-Jacques Lebel about the “happenings” in the 60s.  He is very happy to do an interview and talks at length not only about the “happening” that Michael organised in London, but also a political and cultural history of this whole period of change in the world. And it was great to see Jean Jacques Lebel again too – he inscribed a copy of his book on theHappenings which is an incredible history of the time.  I am honoured to have met these great artists!
