ILLUSTRES!: JEAN MOULIN
by C215
1768 saw construction begin on a magnificent new Paris church dedicated to St. Genevieve. 260 years later, and now serving as a secular mausoleum for distinguished French citizens, The Pantheon hosted a Christian Guemy exhibit beginning in its crypt and flowing out into the surrounding streets. Guemy, aka C215, created 28 portraits of "illustrious" French men and women who have made significant contributions to building the republic—notables such as Jean Moulin (at Rue de l'Estrapade and Rue d'Ulm), who served an exiled Charles de Gaulle in working to unify the efforts of French Resistance groups before being killed by the Gestapo. While C215's stencil portraits often take the shape of society's forgotten citizens, he says behind his work "the question is always freedom and dignity..."—making his efforts to keep these 38 "Illustres" from being forgotten a next logical step. @christianguemy/ @pantheon.paris/

The death of Jean Moulin was officially recorded on July 8, 1943 in Metz station while the Nazis were transporting him to Germany. It is precisely in the central hall of the Metz Station (which bears his name) that a memorial tribute in the form of a sculpture was given to this man of the French Resistance. On Thursday, July 10, 2014 the work chosen by public commission was that of Stephan Balkenhol, a German artist, residing in France and professor of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts from Karlsruhe. An empathetic portrait of Jean Moulin standing high above commuters (for reasons of flow of travelers no work can be installed on the ground). Placed on a cross in the heart of an arch, the figure of Jean Moulin is given a sacred quality. Surrounding the main character is three sculptures (all in bronze) representing " the Army of Shadows ". . . . #metz #France #garedemetz #jeanmoulin (at Gare de Metz) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtfxjhWH0Mm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=by2udsera1gm
