rambling about my own RDR2 fanfiction under the cut <3

no but jebediah lighting the barn on fire is literally such a fantastic narrative move because.

BECAUSE. Jeb's story really starts with them being trapped in the burning barn as a kid. it was ambiguous how the barn lit in the first place-- was it accidental, or did their father light it on purpose with them in it?--and that uncertainty has ate at them like their entire adult life, especially after their mother died and their father disappeared.

Then, in the middle of the story when things with the gang are going south, they are kidnapped/tortured for information/etc, and the cabin ends up burning down with them in it as well. Entirely accidental (a lantern gets knocked over and they're saved by John.) Kinda a big moment that throws them through a loop due to the unhealed trauma of their childhood... they have to work really hard and learn to depend on their newfound family (the gang) to help them, which is really difficult for them.

THEN. Flash forward ten or so years. When they're bounty hunting near the end of their story. They light fire to the barn ON PURPOSE to get his ass. It signifies healing, taking control, and rebirth, yes. But due to the unknown circumstances of Jeb's childhood burning, They're unknowingly REPEATING THE CYCLE!!! THE SINS OF THE FATHER!!!!!
