Rey and her powers without training?

So I think Rey has her amazing light saber abilities because she has always had her staff as protection. In TFA she defended BB-8 from the dudes trying to take him with her staff. She flips the staff around. She wacks people with it.

She also uses it as practice before grabbing her light saber when on the Jedi island. I feel that was the director implying that she is powerful with the light saber, able to fend off Kylo at the end of TFA and in TLJ because of her using this weapon during her previous life on Jakku. Plus also because she has a high midi-chlorians count, of course (most likely. That has not been discussed in the new films...).

Friends argue with me about this. They say that fighting with a light saber is different from with a staff and that her being able to defeat Kylo after so little training just does not make sense.

Thoughts, my fellow fans?

(also, I never posted anything on tumblr so yeah. Feel a little awkward but I was excited about the Star Wars community that seemed to be here so I wanted to try it out. )
