Stan Winston and Jeff Dawn win the Academy Award for Best Makeup for Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) -- presented by Rebecca De Mornay and Christopher Lloyd; introduced by Billy Crystal
A massive hit at the worldwide box office, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the most acclaimed movie sequels of all time. Made at the height of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s popularity in Hollywood, the film was noted for astounding use of CGI. But in an era before CGI was used in all special effects, the film heavily employed practical makeup -- especially in the finale.
The original Terminator was never nominated for an Oscar, but Terminator 2: Judgment Day secured six Academy Award nominations, including Best Cinematography and Film Editing. The film walked away that night with four Oscars: Best Sound (Mixing), Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup. As of 2019, this is Jeff Dawn’s only win from his sole nomination. For the late Stan Winston, he won two Academy Awards that night -- for Makeup and Visual Effects.
For my fellow Trekkies, this was the continuation of the Star Trek franchise’s losing streak at the Oscars -- extending the winless run to nine nominations for three movies.
