In the Kitchen with…Lisa Mayock and Jeff Halmos
we dropped by the Williamsburg apartment of designers Lisa Mayock (Vena Cava) and Jeff Halmos (Shipley & Halmos) while they cooked a multi-vegetable paella dish. (and yes, they actually cook together and look gorgeous while at it…)
Lisa wears our J.Crew Collection featherweight cashmere long-sleeve tee, a Viva Vena pant, a necklace by Marion Vidal and Martiniano sandals. Jeff wears a button-down and jean, both by Shipley & Halmos. So you’re making a multi-vegetable paella. Are you guys vegetarian? Lisa: “No, we eat everything, but I fell in love with this cookbook Plenty: Vibrant Vegetable Recipes from London’s Ottolenghi. Paella is a good dish if you need to clean out the fridge.” Did you modify this recipe at all? Lisa: “I used risotto instead of Calasparra rice like the recipe calls for, and more red peppers. We also used frozen edamame instead of fava beans.”
Do you both cook? And most important, who does the dishes? Lisa: “More often, I will be the cook and Jeff will do the cleaning up. But we alternate. I still end up using as many dishes as possible when I cook. It’s a weekend activity for us.” Jeff: “I’m a clean-up-as-you-go kind of guy.” What are a few things that are always in your fridge? Jeff: “Arugula, chocolate, white wine (we’re members of a wine club and never end up drinking the white we get each month), this one type of salty cheese from a shop near our house, bourbon-soaked cherries (for cocktails) and prosciutto.” Do you ever take cooking classes? Lisa: “We started taking classes at the Institute of Culinary Education. Those classes are great for building confidence in the kitchen.” Jeff: “The last one we took was a seafood class, but I can’t remember the official name. It was fun and covered a wide range of fish preparations.”
Ultimate comfort food? Jeff: “BBQ. Fette Sau in our neighborhood is a favorite.” What do you like to wear when you cook? Lisa: “I love this idiotic novelty apron that I got in Italy. It has a very large-scale photograph of the David from the chest to the knee on it and is probably carried at every tourist shop. It’s a key part of my preferred cooking ensemble.” Favorite restaurants to go to when you’re not cooking? Jeff: “That’s a tough question—there are so many great spots. Samurai Mama, Marlow & Sons, Baci & Abbracci and Khao Sarn are our regular stops. Oh, and if the owners of Motorino are reading this, please open up a new location in Williamsburg. We miss your breakfast pizza dearly.” Jeff, what’s the last dish you cooked for Lisa? Jeff: “Thanks for putting me on the spot. When I can’t remember the last dish I made for her, it means I should probably be doing more cooking!”
