A couple of years ago I ran into a friend on the street (kind of an infrequent occurrence in L.A., though less so now that I ride a bike). She said she was going to a performance by some art "legend" whose name escaped her at the moment. She asked if I wanted to come along.

Sure, why not?

It was in the back room of a nondescript industrial building on Glendale Boulevard (not far from Pehrspace) that was obviously some artist's studio (though I never did find out whose). And the legend was in fact "the Fluxus cab driver," Jeff Perkins. He sat behind a bank of slide projectors and a series of fan-like devices. There was, I think, live musical accompaniment, but I couldn't tell you who it was. In fact, the whole evening is kind of a blurry haze, dream-like. Which, I guess, is only fitting. The projections were simple, minimal, geometric flickers -- much like the video here -- but they were sublimely hypnotic.

A chance encounter leading to a moment of unexpected beauty.

[Okay, I'll 'fess up and admit that, after I wrote all that, I found some video of the L.A. performance that I attended. Apparently, the musicians were Greg Lenczycki and Ted Byrnes. But I like the music of the video I've posted here better and it is a longer clip of the light show, so I'm sticking with this one.]
