Tips and Tricks on Photographing Your Artwork
Here's a few notes that have been live tweeted to VAA-CARFAC's twitter during our current event on photo documenting artwork with Jeff Rodier:
1st basic rule: don't shoot any slower than your shutter size, if you're going handheld. So 50mm lens, 1/50th sec shutter speed.
2nd basic rule: the higher your ISO, the grainer the image. You get a brighter image in exchange for sharpness. 3rd basic rule: if your work is not gallery ready, it is probably not ready for photo documentation. 4th basic rule: for 2D artwork, you want aim for bright equal, light throughout the ENTIRE surface of the piece. 5th basic rule: although photoshop may be necessary, try to limit it as much possible. 6th basic rule: If all else fails, shoot against black. 7th basic rule (the most important one): Keep it simple! 1st Etsy photography rule: knickknacks or homey looking things in the background of your photos is fine. 2nd Etsy Photography Rule: Use natural light and reflectors! In the morning. Noon light is usually too hard. 3rd Etsy Photography Rule: Don't keep it simple... #breakinthelaw
