ANNIHILATOR (1984 - present) | METAL HAMMER, July 1990.
Monday, June 23: Annihilator, "One Falls, Two Rise"
At around 8 and a half minutes, “One Falls, Two Rise” leaned into the perception that Jeff Waters was more about aimless wankery than thoughtful songcraft even after 25ish years on the scene. Feast’s closing number was also something of a farewell for longtime frontman Dave Padden, who was somewhat anonymous as a singer but generally understood how to serve the songs, so he modulated his vocals pretty well between the soft intro and thrashy middle. But it was not clear what purpose that 2 and a half minute intro served other than to make the track seem “epic”, even if said intro was pretty good, since the fast part was exactly what one would expect from Waters. Since Annihilator was nothing if not consistent, Mike Harshaw’s drumming was precise as was Waters’ production, though like most of their post-Roadrunner output it had that clinical home studio feel. “One Falls, Two Rise” had a lot of bits, and pretty much all of them were good, but they didn’t cohere under a single purpose, and with such a lengthy runtime it got a little exhausting.
