your phone rang with jeff’s name in big letters sprawled along the top. you slid your phone open and answered it, tucking your phone between your ear and shoulder.

“hey, you busy?” jeff asked on the other line. your phone wasn’t lined up properly so it was hard to hear, but you heard well enough.

“just editing, what’s up?” you asked as you typed on your computer. you heard some muffling around on his end, but ignored it.

“oh, just wanted to see if you wanted to hang out maybe?” he asked. you let out a sigh and took your phone in your hand, switched ears and leaned back in your chair.

“maybe when i’m done editing. i’ve got a lot of work to do,” you told him. your heart ached and you felt but some things were more important.

“i do, too. maybe we can edit together?” he asked, hopeful. you stayed silent on the phone for a moment.

“i don’t know,” you said softly, looking at just how much footage you needed to edit. he was a distraction and that was the last thing you needed.

“come on,” he pleaded playfully. he almost had you until he spoke again. “i just need an excuse to hang out with you.” you sighed again, bit your lip and hesitantly agreed. his charm was never lost on you. “great! i’ll see you soon!” he cheered on the other end and hung up, leaving you to regret your decision but only until he showed up.
