RI Volley News “Where Are They Now?”: Jeffrey Robert
August 5, 2019
In the new RI Volley News “Where Are They Now?” series, Neil Nachbar caught up with former Bishop Hendricken player/Cranston East assistant coach Jeffrey Robert:
Jeffrey Robert
• Played at Bishop Hendricken
• Coached JV girls' volleyball at Cranston East
• Coached club volleyball for Blast and South County
In May 2019, Jeff graduated from the University of Georgia with his doctorate. While at UGA in 2018, he was an assistant volunteer coach for the Division I women’s volleyball program, where he had the opportunity to learn coaching techniques at a high level under Tom Black.
As of July, Jeff moved to Blacksburg, Virginia to take a faculty position at Virginia Tech, where he will teach real estate development, statistics, and finance.
Dalaney Algiere, Jeff’s fiancé, will work as a mechanical design engineer with Moog, Inc. The couple met at a gathering hosted by Rhode Island volleyball coach/player Shelley Grambley.
Jeff and Delaney continue to play volleyball in recreational leagues. Jeff also plans on playing with the Virginia Tech faculty a couple of times a week.
“Wherever we go, volleyball will be there and we will be playing,” said Jeff. “We will miss all of our fellow Rhode Island volleyball players, teammates and beach partners.”
One of Jeff’s fondest memories as an assistant coach under Meg McGonagle at Cranston East was a comeback win in the quarterfinals at Tolman.
“We were down 19-23 and came back to win in extra points against top-seeded Tolman,” recalled Jeff. “There were a number of great digs by our libero and many more pressure serves from the back line. What I remember the most was the team’s focus and collective determination to fight for each point. For those familiar with the Tolman gym, it was deafeningly loud, yet the girls came together with a huge team win.”
As a player, one of Jeff’s fondest memories came in 2005, his junior year. Hendricken and Coventry were undefeated half way through the season and were meeting for the first time.
“Our starting rotation was a mix of sophomores and juniors. We were facing a tall and experienced Coventry team. Neither team dominated and both demonstrated their number one ranking,” said Jeff. “However, Hendricken survived what I believe was a five-set duel. After that match, I felt great pride in our accomplishment. That game was a turning point where I no longer viewed volleyball as a high school sport, but as a lifelong pursuit.”
