I needed to draw Miyamoto and Yukichi running away from Jei just like how they ran from him during ice and snow. I referenced the smiling friends meme because I really wanted to drive home how spooked usagi was.

Forgive me if someone asked already, but how did Usagi got into the deal with Big Mama in the 1st place? And what will happen to him when his body is covered in that black..stuff completely?

Usagi’s master, Lord Mifune, was cut down in battle and killed by Jei using the Blade of the Gods, which steals and traps souls. Usagi blames himself for his master’s death, and tries to kill Jei. No matter how many times he does, Jei always comes back, so he makes a deal with Big Mama. His own soul in exchange for his Master’s. She gives him a weapon capable of permanently killing Jei, and frees Mifune’s soul.

(If you don’t know who Jei or Lord Mifune are, they’re characters from the Usagi Yojimbo comics)

As for the patterns, it can go one of two ways. If he dies before it happens, his soul will go to Big Mama. If he doesn’t, his soul will still go to her, but he will still roam. He will technically be alive, but completely soulless, like an empty vessel. No morals, no personality. Just emptiness.
