In Jel, colors are all fairly basic words. This makes them easy to add to a word as a contraction-adjective. Also, the color adjectives for metallic colors are not based off of the corresponding metals, unlike English.
Would the syllables "tsu" or "zu" and "resh" or possibly "reth/rezh" work within established Jel, and if so are there related words to extrapolate likely meanings for them?
Nice question. I pulled up a great resource @languagesoftamriel to help in my research. It hasn’t been updated in awhile, but has a compilation of all of the Jel that was around like a couple of years ago or so (both canon and created by myself and others interested in crafting the language). Read more below on what I found!
Starting with “tsu/ zu” There are two similar syllables found, one of them appearing in canon. The first is “tso,” which appears in the canon word Tsonashap, the word for ‘swimming frog,’ as well as lu_ming’s word Tsodu which is basically Jel for “ass.” Those two don’t have much in common, though are from different sources so take that as you will. The other syllable that shows up, only in lu_ming’s vernacular, is Tsuq, which means to cook (read: burn) food. The syllable Zu doesn’t appear in any current words for Jel, but if combined with other decent sounding ones, it should be fine. Be careful, or it could end up sounding closer to Dovahzul, shich has a lot more prominent ‘z’ sounds.
Are Tsu and Zu syllable that would fit in the style of known Jel? YES. Is there a meaning to be extrapolated for either? NOPE. Make your own!
Next up, “resh/ reth/ rezh.” Right away, these feel a lot closer to sounds that appear in Ta’agra rather than Jel, but that doesn’t mean they would not be present. No occurrence of them or anything really similar is found in known Jel, so once again, if you want those in there, it’s up to you to make them sounds right!
((Hi there! I'm told you know how to translate words/names into Jel? I want to translate my Argonian's Cyrodiilic name, but I'm not sure where to begin.))
{ Hey! Yes, well it's not all so scientific or anything...Most of my Jel words/ names are of my own creation based off of already established lore and how I think the Jel language should sound. First off--and this might be somewhat obvious--make sure you like it. It's your character, and you should be happy with the name. So if you don't like the sound of how a name or the words in the name sound to you, simply don't use it.
All of the words that I have translated so far, along with other sources are posted on this lovely person's Tamriel Language Directory. I would start there so you can see all the Jel words that are currently out there. If none of these appeal to you or match the Cyrodiilic name you already have, feel free to come to me and I can help you come up with something that sounds like what you want and also sounds native to Black Marsh!
