✈ — an eye-opening memory

A 12 year old Eve was lazing by the pool with her best friends. Ashley, Lacy, Anna and Julie were taking turns jumping into the water and trying to make big splashes. Anna joined her a moment later. “So did you see Frankie?” the dirty blonde haired girl asked aloud to the group. 

They had just returned to school after summer break and most of the girls just couldn’t stop talking about how much the boys around them had changed. “What about him?” Eve said furrowing her brow. 

“Are you kidding?” Anna said shocked. “He’s so cute!” A dreamy sigh escaping her.

“I guess?” She said shrugging. 

“You guess?? Well what boy in class do you think is cute?” asked Lacy as she dropped down into the grass between Anna and Eve. “Because Frankie is cute, and Matt got hot.”  

Julie poped up out of the water. “What are we talking about?” She asked swimming to the edge of the pool her red hair plastered to the side of her face. “I thought I heard Matt.”

“Eve doesn’t think Frankie got cute.” Lacy replied.

“But he’s so cute!” Julie said her eyes darting to Eve. Ashley pushed herself out of the pool and made her way to sit down on the other side of Eve. 

“If anything Mickey got the cutest.” Ashely chimed in. 

“Come on Eve. Who do you think got the cutest?” Anna asked, which caused Eve to groan. 

“I guess if I have to say anyone…Mickey?” She said shrugging, if she was honest she would have said Celeste, but she didn’t wasn’t ready to admit that. Three of the four girls groaned and got up. 

“You’re so weird Evie.” Anna said. “Lets go get ice cream though!” She added. Following Anna was Lacy and Julie. Ashley stayed behind and Eve pushed herself up.

“I’m gonna jump in the water real quick then I’ll come join.” She said to the blonde girl. “You don’t have to wait.”  Ashley shook her head  and scooted to the edge of the pool. Eve jumped in and then popped up from under the water a moment later.  

“So who did you REALLY want to say?” Ashley asked smirking as she watched her friend. 

“No one, Mickey has gotten the cutest, you weren’t wrong.” She said as she swam over to the other girl. What happened next caught Eve off guard and happened so quickly she wasn’t sure if she dreamt it. Ashley leaned over grabbed Eve by her chin and kissed her square on the lips. 

“I’m pretty sure you wanted to say me.” Ashley said before standing up and starting to walk away. Eve was flabergasted, her brain was racing a million miles an hour she wasn’t sure how to take what just happened or what to do. It wasn’t that she was weirded out or that she was scared she’d get in trouble, it was Miami for heavens sake–she just wasn’t expecting it. But she was sure of one thing, that kiss, though fast and caught her off guard was the best kiss she had had in her 12 years of life…not that she had more than three–scratch that, four, kisses to go off of.
