Jennifer Kent - The Nightingale (2019) Looking for a light watch to help while away the quarantine days? Then don't watch this. Jennifer Kent's The Nightingale is one of the hardest to watch films to come out in the last few years, it is also one of the most rewarding watches you can have. Just be aware that this merits all the trigger warnings possible to imagine. What on it's surface seems to be a film firmly in the genre of "rape revenge" evolves into being so much more than that. Kent comes from genre film, her previous being the also surprisingly deep The Babadook, and here she intertwines identities and forms of oppression in ways that make this film as much about misogyny as about colonialism, racism, power relations and human cruelty of which said misogyny is only one of its facets. With a really great cast, particularly in the two stars Aisling Franciosi and Baykali Ganambarr as unlikely allies and Sam Clafin as a truly despicable villain, the film ends up being more than its parts. Beautiful cinematography and writing, the way in which it explores the damage that colonization of lands, minds and both native and women's bodies does to people is truly astounding. The simple way in which the two main characters realize that there are more things that unite them by being victims of colonization than separate them being respectively an Irish woman and an Aboriginal Tasmanian man is truly touching. Such a hard, beautiful, touching, infuriating and sad film. Australian director Jennifer Kent’s 2014 directorial debut “The Babadook” immediately became a modern horror classic, making Kent’s second feature “The Nightingale” five years later more compelling. Under the packaging of the revenge genre, “The Nightingale” exudes a more desperate atmosphere. Taking us back to the 19th century Australia, the cruelty of the European colonial era is filled with endless violence and blood in each single frame. “The Nightingale” is a revenge against colonialism, violence, sexual assault and murder. It’s full of brutal scenes and was a controversy nominated film during last year Venice Film Festival.

In the early part of the film, Kent’s approach is very direct to the sexual violent that Clare (Aisling Franciosi) suffers, minimizing her mental state. For these moments, audiences feel as if they are being unbearably humiliated. Cinematographer Radek Ladczuk, who also worked on “The Babadook”, used the academy ratio to capture Franciosi’s pain with close-up, magnifying the evil impact of the violent.

Seeking the revenge, Kent adds a complex layer to the theme. Claire also discriminates against the native Australians, and her accompany Billy (Baykali Ganambarr) hates these white outsiders as well. The relationship between the two makes the journey a lot more interesting and complicated.

The visually visible mud and blood on Claire and Billy deepen their struggles. “The Nightingale” not only looks at the suffering situation of native people from the perspective of outsiders, but creates a more complex situation, blurring the line between sin and trauma.

Claire was struggling to win her revenge, or we can say that she didn’t win at all. Her position has constantly shifted between the victim and the perpetrator. When violence becomes the redemption for problem solving, none of us will be the winner eventually.
