/Star Trek over Star Wars. Listen, I come from a family where we love two things: Lord of the Rings (all things Tolkein-related really) and Star Trek. I grew up on Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion and I love earthen fantasy because of those stories and their characters. Every time I play a tabletop or an online RPG, I always make at least one character who is a dwarf or an imp or just a little guy because my favorite character was (and arguably still is) Gimli and my favorite civilization was the Dwarves.
I was introduced to Star Trek much, much later, around the time when I was home from college, and oh my good lord, the original television show from the ‘60s is an absolute gem. It’s a tacky, whimsical, laugh riot that while, yes, it didn’t age well in some places (like, shall we say their unique fashion sense that was very much a product of the times and Shatner’s crash course on how-to overact and hog the camera in every shot), there are also some episodes that provide very insightful social and political commentary that still resonate with many of the things that we experience today. It’s as unmistakably brilliant as it is charming, and for me I take the good with the bad, riff the cheesy line reads and flimsy fight choreography left and right and enjoy every goddamn minute of it while it’s on screen.
Now, to be clear: I do not hate Star Wars. I just.... don’t get it. I have never understood it or anything that is going on throughout the series. It tries to mesh sci-fi with fantasy and for me, it just doesn’t add up. It’s not my cup of tea, what can I say? I love the original Star Trek and most of its later iterations (i.e. Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, the first two J.J. Abrams movie remakes, etc...), but I’m just so far removed and confused by the happenings of the Star Wars franchise that at this point, I doubt I’ll ever get into it.
