Jeremy Knox decides he will end his life on the day of Jean’s birthday. He will do it a week later, that gives him seven days to make it easier on his friends. He can at least prepare them for it—for his absence. He wants to be a good memory, not a sour one.
Jean really sucks at Monopoly. He’s never played it before, he confesses as much when he opens the present Xavier got him.
He is not the best with stress so he’s muttering in French and trying to keep up with all the properties he lands on, but he’s handing out note after note of rainbow paper. He’s got two mint green twenties and a single purple fifty left.
Jeremy finds it fun to watch him. So focused, with a crease between his eyebrows. He wants to lean over and smooth it with his thumb, but he refrains. He doesn’t catch the word Jean says as he hands his fifty over to Laila. His French lessons are not very in-depth and he doesn’t think there’s a tape on swearing. Maybe he’ll have to look.
“Play nice,” Jeremy says.
Jean glares at him, “I am nice.”
