it’s a huge mess. i watched it when i was 8 and couldn’t understand it. it’s full of crap, like floating pencil sketches and little chaotic figures, in every frame. the kim basinger cartoon is ridiculously oversexualized. and the production is so strange. the flesh and blood characters like gabriel byrne and brad pitt are usually “in front of” the cartoon, but when they are viewed from the side the cartoon is replaced with painted wooden boards. the world of cool world is a strange one, governed by a single law (not a firm basis for a society): humans cannot fuck cartoons. the rest of the movie is pretty much the tragic consequences of that law, i guess. it could be viewed as a parable about how societies which mock the desire to have sex with cartoon figures are doomed to repression and hypocrisy. brad pitt does make this funny clicking sound with his tongue at one point when he pushes off of a wall.
