I realized I never posted about New Kid after than my middle grade book haul. This was such an amazing graphic novel. On one level it’s a simple story of about being the new kid in school. On a deeper level, the author captured how microaggressions are happening every single day to people of color, and how it affects the way POC interact with aggressors, and makes them constantly on edge to find safe spaces. . What I appreciated about the New Kid is how effectively this graphic novel depicts this type of discrimination. Growing up I would have loved to read this, to understand that uncomfortable and uneasy feeling I got when people treated me or my parents with microaggressive language/behavior. It’s hard to stand up for yourself when you aren’t sure how to explain why you feel discriminated against. I highly recommend this to all readers, but especially young POC. My full review is up on Goodreads. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5⠀ .⠀ #QOTD: What are some of your favorite graphic novels?
