“This is the most Grinderman-like of Nick Cave’s Bad Seed records, and it’s hard to know whether his heavier rockier swearier side project gatecrashed these recording sessions or he just had too many songs leftover. It’s a brilliant album – Cave is never not brilliant – although it’s not one of my favourites. That may be because I tend to prefer his sensitive side to his punk days. I find it similar in style (but like the older annoying cousin) to Nocturama. Cave’s favourite themes crop up on this record: god, death, love and sex all smeared with a certain amount of seediness and gothic sensibility, but the overall feel is that “We’re going to have a real good time” as he proclaims on Today’s Lesson...” .
