The Motherland Chapters: Siquijor. Many Filipinos who don't live on the island are quite fearful of this place as it gained an identity for being an island of "witchcraft". It really goes to show the colonial, patriarchal wound that is still in need of healing. Before the Spanish colonized these islands, we had what was called the Babaylan. Babaylan is a Visayan term for an indigenous Filipino spiritual leader, usually female, who works with their connection to the Earth and spirit realms, and functions as a healer, a shaman, a seer and a community "miracle-worker" -- in other words, a witch. During the colonization, Catholic priests - who travelled with the colonizers that raped and slaughtered our ancestors, and dispossessed their lands - took the place of the Babaylan, claimed authority on what is "good" and "evil", and demonized the witch, making us fearful of her. The rest is history. Crazy right? #jesuswouldnotapprove #reclaimculture #ancestralhealing . I spent the next few days meeting different healers around their island. Each one had their own modality. One was a Bulo-Bulo healer who blew into a glass of water containing a stone given to him by an Engkantada to cleanse one's body. Some were herbalists who grew and harvested native plants for medicine, protective amulets, and ritual. One was a body worker. All the healers I met didn't charge for their healing sessions. They didn't even want money handed to them, and instead had a donation box if you felt compelled to give a contribution. . What was interesting about most of the healers was that they were what I would call Catholic mystics. They had Catholic iconography in their homes, yet practiced what would normally be frowned upon by the Catholic faith. It was nice to be able to talk about elementals, energy, plant medicine and plant spirits with the islanders, like we were on the same wavelength. Turns out, all was not lost. . After our tours, we visited a coconut plantation, a seaweed farm (in which we made the dopest salads from freshly harvested seaweed), and watched the sun set on the beach. I saw more and more how Abundance is in Nature. . #Siquijor #islandlife #healer #philippines #visayas (at Siquijor Island)
