5o years ago, Apollo 14 on the Moon… February 5, 1971 as Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard steps out onto the lunar surface in the Fra Mauro region, we can easily see Shepard kept his Omega Speedmaster chronograph at Houston Mission Control - Texas time as it shows approximately 09:00 Central Standard Time. Commander Shepard was the first to wear a NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster 145.012 chronograph on the Moon as he used NASA #75 Speedmaster. Apollo 14 Moonwalkers, Shepard and Mitchell conducted two lunar EVAs, the first 600 m westwards from the LM and a second 2900 m roundtrip eastwards from the Lunar Module Antares. They stayed 33 hours on the lunar surface and collected 42 kilograms Moon rocks & samples. (Photo: NASA)
It’s the F-29 Retaliator!...well, it’s really an X-29. But you’ll see where I’m going here…. Pic 1: Smoke generators in the nose of the X-29 aircraft were used to help researchers see the behavior of the air flowing over the aircraft. The smoke here is demonstrating forebody vortex flow. (NASA Photo) Pic 2: The second of the X-29s built was required to fly at higher angles of attack than the first X-29 which necessitated it to have a spin chute system for safety. The system deployed a parachute for recovery of the aircraft if it inadvertently entered an uncontrolled spin. Most of the components of the spin chute system were located on a truss at the aft end of the aircraft. In addition, there were several cockpit modifications to facilitate use of the chute. (NASA Photo) Pic 3: The X-29 Cockpit looks a far cry from the cockpit I was familiar with during the many, many, many hours I spent as a kid playing the “cutting edge” game F-29 Retaliator – see Pics 4-7 Pics 4-7: Does anyone else remember playing this one? 🌎 www.iloveahangar.com #aircraft #airforce #airshow #avgeek #aviation #aviationdaily #aviationgeek #aviationhistory #aviationlovers #aviationphotos #avnerd #jetpilot #instaaviation #militaryaviation #militaryaviationphotography #usaf #pilot #testpilot #x29 #usaf https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ7FM_ohKvo/?igshid=1fzl9a54uydqh
