“Delta Dawn” ♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤ Dawn begins to break into a new day as the sun pushes the darkness ahead of herself pressing the ever-shifting layers of Jovian-seeming clouds like curtains of the night aside finding the searching deltoid beam of a westing Eastern Washington Gateway empty glinting off the railhead on the more than 125-year-old right-of-way. Having dipped down from the gradually flattening 1.20% grade at Hanson five miles yonder with two units and an abbreviated file of PS2’s and ACF’s it now bears down on the bearly-stirring 150-soul hamlet eponymous of early settler John Hartline (German, Anglo-Saxon for strong or bold). And though the crew has no work here today, Engineer Ted Curphy will signal their “just-passing-through” as he chimes the iconic Nathan-crisp two longs, one short, one long twice: once at Range Street just a stones through from the Assembly of God Chruch where the “light” is, still, always on and shortly thereafter at Main-Chelan Street where between, butted-tightly along the tracks, stand the sky-scrapping elevators of grain. I’ve had this image ready to post for several weeks all the while ruminating, pondering its backstory, even asking family and friends for input yet every attempt to alchemize “words” produced no auric compound, only lead. In the small, still, still-black hours of this morning I simply let it go and resigned to the immutable fact that some images need no words for they – mere words – would diminish the raw, undressed image as it stands. So I’ll let this image, entitled “Crucible,” speak for itself. "Highball – Lowball" ♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤ On BNSF’s infamous Lakeside Sub, a not-so-unusual, yet counterintuitive dispatching maneuver – load upgrade, empty downgrade – an eastbounding empty unit train highballs around Queen Lucas Lake down the low side of Marshall Canyon on the ex-Northern Pacific main while its loaded antithesis on the high side has the lowball at Scribner on the ex-Spokane, Portland & Seattle main waiting for the grainer to clear in order to proceed as the former yet spectacular SP&S main between Spokane and Pasco comes to an end – unfortunately dismantled in the mid-80’s – a mile ahead at Fish Lake Jct. where it will continue its “run” into Pasco Washington on the notoriously hyper-congested Lakeside Sub. “OMD @ Lyons” ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ Again, I find myself at Lyons, most likely for its accessibility, more probable because it’s where opposing trains - especially in the late evening - meet just west of Spokane to relieve congestion in the “Funnel,” I suppose. The meets are essentially on the roll so as not to block crossings. Meeting trains communicate their approach and relative speed and when one or the other, depending on its length, should proceed into the siding or roll up on the main just shy of the siding switch foul point. Presently an empty “Oilcan” holds the main as a “Vehicle” train slowly slips into the siding (veering to the left) with its pneumatic FRED bringing up the rear, “fisting” his monotonous staccato code while the illuminating oil train crew performs a roll by from the coziness of their insolated comfort cab: the ass end of the last auto rack clears the switch and the eastbound Oiler can begin its decent off the Columbia River Sub into Spokane. “Hiball!” Its arrhythmic GE’s gurgle a bit, bumble past; shiny-wet black tubes following, inaudibly stealing by in the damp invisible darkness. In less than thirty minutes the industrious nocturne orchestration is perfected…until the next OMD at Lyons.
