John Watson always thought he would go out like a soldier, like a tree when they chop it down, strong and solid. And Sherlock—poor, miscalculating Sherlock—never thought experimenting on his only friend would do any harm. But that was before the Hound.
Sherlock fic isn't my usual fare, but Please God, Let Me Live by inkfingers_mcgee (jevonne on tumblr, and a friend of mine!) is a sharp-edged dive into Sherlock's mind after he makes a terrible mistake during the Baskerville case. Jevonne has great command of language and captures Sherlock's character in the midst of a breakdown perfectly. Check it out!

as few as one unless they’re some crazy self-control machine.
