White Bank-Dry Rocks Reef (Wheeler’s Reef)

Key Largo, Florida

This is a very young Atlantic Goliath Grouper judging by its size (only about 200 pounds).  When fully grown they weigh in at 800 pounds or more.  A critically endangered species and, unfortunately, highly curious.  This little guy came up to me with no fear.  This is why many are caught or mistreated.  I have not seen one on this reef section in several years.

The goliath grouper, also known as a jewfish, is found in the Florida Keys. They have been known to weigh as much as 800 pounds yet still live shallow waters near the coral reef and often under a dock. Their primary diet is crustaceans but they will eat just about any slow moving fish. Anglers avidly pursue the #goliathgrouper but they are very protected and are a catch and release only fish.
