Simon somehow rescued from the SM-13 and is on the Hail Mary. How? Not important.
Cue freakouts etc. etc.
He and Grace and Rocky get acclimated to each other and share their stories.
Simon goes on in some detail about Eden.
"That kinda sounds like a cult, Simon." Thank you, Captain obvious.
"Grace name is Grace, not Obvious."
"Not a captain!"
Simon asks him "Well what was it like for you?"
Grace isn't an expert or anything, but starts talking about religion as far as he knows from Earth. I.E., not very much. Mostly Xtian-based stuff.
Yeah he gets into talking about Gan Eden.
Grace knows that there's lots of other religions, but he doesn't really know much about them.
There's so much explaining to Rocky. But he gets it; there's religion in a way on Erid, but we're not getting into that.
Grace does remember that Simon's name is "biblical."
Simon gets curious, he starts researching his name.
He gets to the meaning, in the original Hebrew, (שמעון) and the context.
A mother who prayed for a child, and was heard.
He definitely doesn't start crying.
Nope.
He goes into more research about Judaism.
It's so much different than Father from Eden.
The prayers, when they use the word father, it's our father. Like an actual parent.
He still isn't really sure what he believes anymore, especially after everything he's been through; Eden and whatever the fuck happened on the SM-13.
But something about this...
And the prayer he keeps seeing again and again, starts with a word that's almost his name. Shema. Hear.
He keeps turning everything he learns over in his head.
His name is so, so important to him. His actual name. Not a title, not something that denotes his status.
But he can't stop thinking about it.
His mother gave him his name.
Did she have believe that she'd been heard, to have received him?
...
He makes an announcement to Grace and Rocky; he's going by Shimon now.
Grace smiles as he changes the entry for Rocky's tune for Simon's name to Shimon.
Grace does his own research after that.
When Grace first calls him Shimmy as a nickname, he gets teary-eyed and Grace gets a tight one-armed hug.
Shimon is pronounced like she-moan, not like Simon with an h, btw.
