things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY
Some other topics:
Stopped reading a fic yesterday because the characters were playing Never Have I Ever and one of them said "Never have I ever [done X]" and then that character also drank because they had, in fact, done X.
Also a friend just told me of a fic where someone made matzah for dinner... it's so easy to attain information.........

SPEE COK
Made your choice? Hit the readmore to find out which of my students' favorite foods you turned out to be! [TIP: you can Reblog and Tag this post to let your friends know what you chose!]
I voted SPEE COK but I need people to know that Kazoo wrote out all the answers, and two separate children wrote FLAW and those are my favorites.
I think I did well on most of them, I didn't get two, four, or five of these particular answers, maybe one or two more.
This is also a PSA please if you work with kids see if you can get them to write down their favorite recipe, someone brought a "kids recipe book" from their class and a whole room of drunk college kids were hysterically laughing about it, it was so damn funny.

Reblogging again for pride month 2025.
This is for all those who were promised community, only to be rejected and banned. To all those who can't wear or fly a Magen David ✡️ without being accused of blood libel. To those who had their community turn their backs on them. To those who have had self-proclaimed nazi punchers spew nazi rhetoric back to their face. To those who are lost. To those that lost friends, lost their sense of belonging, because people stole our word and re-defined it to mean something dirty.
To the queer Jews, and allies, who don't have the same place of belonging that they had before October 7th. To those that aren't here anymore, after. Happy Pride.
2026!
Wishing safety and belonging to everyone, especially my Jewish mishpacha and our allies. 💚🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️✡️
Ugh, they tried to pit diaspora Iranians against Iranians in Iran? Gross, screw them. Women, life, freedom!
I have this ever-growing feeling that the rest of the world is just waiting for us to finally be exterminated.
Even here, I look at my feed, and it's Ukrainian mutuals talking about what's going on and non-Ukrainian ones just waiting it out. Waiting us out.
I don't know how i can live in a world like this. I feel ashamed for the past-me for not noticing this, the world being like this, earlier.
I'm so sorry. What a horrible feeling. But you do have allies. I'm sorry that I'm so quiet about it.
May Ukraine know peace, and victory. Slava Ukraini.
what's your favorite dairy-based food?
Cheese without a doubt. I eat it melted, caked, creamed, just chomping into a block. I love cheese. Not Swiss, though, even if I like other cheeses from Switzerland.
I love ice cream, too, and yogurt, and milk (although I gotta be careful with that due to intolerance but I've got pills) but they don't hold a candle to cheese itself.
🧀 My beloved. 🧀
What's your favorite flower?
All purpose.
In 1942, during Nazi occupation in Tunisia, a German officer sat at dinner bragging about a Jewish woman he planned to target next.
A man sitting across from him listened quietly.
He smiled.
Poured more wine.
Finished the meal.
Then, after midnight, he drove through the dark streets and knocked on a family’s door with a warning that would save 25 lives.
His name was Khaled Abdul-Wahab.
At just 31 years old, Khaled was a wealthy Tunisian Muslim who spoke fluent German and moved easily among Nazi officers stationed in Tunisia — the only Arab country directly occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II.
That night, after hearing the officer speak the woman’s name aloud, Khaled knew danger was coming.
He rushed to the family’s home and told them:
“Pack nothing. Come now.”
Over the next hours, he gathered 25 Jewish men, women, and children and secretly transported them nearly 20 miles away to his family farm near Mahdia.
For four months, he hid them inside storage buildings, stables, and an olive press while Nazi forces searched nearby communities.
Food was scarce.
Discovery meant death.
But Khaled never abandoned them.
When German soldiers arrived near the farm, the hidden families sometimes pinned yellow stars back onto their clothing and stood silently to avoid suspicion. Once the soldiers left, the stars came off again.
One night, a drunken German soldier stumbled onto the property and discovered the people hiding there. An eleven-year-old girl later remembered watching in terror from beneath a bed as the soldier threatened everyone.
Then Khaled appeared.
Calmly, he led the soldier outside, disarmed him, and sent him away.
Every person survived.
In May 1943, Tunisia was liberated, and all 25 people returned home alive.
What makes the story even more remarkable is what happened afterward:
Khaled never told anyone.
Not his wife.
Not his daughters.
Not even his closest friends.
He returned to ordinary life, raising a family and working quietly in public service until his death in 1997.
More than a decade later, his daughter Faiza accidentally discovered the truth while reading a newspaper interview about a Tunisian man who had saved Jewish families during the war.
The man was her father.
Today, the descendants of the 25 people Khaled saved live across the world because one man chose courage over silence during one of history’s darkest moments.
Heroes do not always seek recognition.
Some simply do what is right — and say nothing about it afterward.
Shadows of Antiquity
I got tears in my eyes. Tell his story. 💚
An 18-year-old North Carolina woman was charged with conspiring with two men to attack a Texas synagogue and "kill as many Jews as possible,
The Jewish Herald-Voice - Houston's Jewish Newspaper
A North Carolina woman was arrested Thursday, April 23, after authorities said she plotted a violent attack targeting Beth Israel synagogue in Houston.
Angelina Han Hicks, 18, is facing felony charges, according to an arrest warrant from Davidson County.
Hicks is accused of conspiring with two men – identified only as “Teegan” and “Angel” – to carry out an attack.
Authorities believe the group planned to “kill as many Jews as possible” by driving through the congregation.
Hicks is charged with two counts of felony conspiracy. One count involves conspiracy to commit murder under both North Carolina and Texas law.
The second count alleges conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, as well as aggravated assault under Texas law.
While Hicks has been arrested, the investigation is ongoing with the two alleged co-conspirators not yet arrested.
Hicks' bond has been set at $10 million, and her next court date is scheduled for May 13.
On Wednesday, Congregation Beth Israel and its Shlenker School were closed early after the Houston Police Department informed them of a potential threat to the Reform synagogue and Jewish day school.
No other Houston Jewish organizations or schools were threatened, according to the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.
“After significant discussions with both the FBI and HPD, we have been advised that it is safe for other local Jewish institutions to remain open,” the Jewish Federation said in a statement.
Local law enforcement agencies increased patrols around Houston-area Jewish institutions as the Houston Jewish community celebrated Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israel’s 78th anniversary on April 22.
Yom Ha’atzmaut events went on as planned without incident.
Shlenker Head of School Dr. Michelle Barton and school president Arturo Karakowsky sent out a statement to parents Wednesday.
“There is nothing more important than the safety and security of your children and our faculty and staff. We acted quickly and out of an abundance of caution to ensure that no one was placed at risk,” the statement read.
Beth Israel Rabbi David Lyon, along with synagogue president Susan Feigin Harris and executive director Casey Cole also sent out a message to synagogue members.
“We understand that this type of message can be unsettling. Please know that this decision was made thoughtfully, with safety as our top priority and in coordination with trusted partners.”
Shlenker sent an email to parents Wednesday evening saying the school will reopen Thursday.
“This situation is fluid, ongoing and under investigation,” the Federation said.
“We will share information, as warranted, in partnership with Congregation Beth Israel and The Shlenker School. We all remain in close communication with HPD, the FBI and local and national security partners.”
Once again very glad it was stopped, and that nobody was hurt. I'm glad it's being cut off before anything can happen. BH.
It feels overwhelming. I can't keep up with everything. There's more and more.

Another violent attack on Jews in London today. Stabbing, two men in hospital. The attacker has yet to make any published statement of motive.
The Labour party gave a reasonable statement ("outrageous attack", "an attack on Jews is an attack on Britain"). The Green Party, ostensibly led by a Jew but very much catering to the young social justice crowd, made a statement little better than "thoughts and prayers"
The comments under the prime minister's statement are full of "but Israel is being so meeeeean".
Pretending that the pro-Palestine movement has not been infiltrated by people actively using it to drive violent antisemitism is naive at best and collusive at worst.
The fact that calling this out gets one labelled a "genocide apologist" is a feature, not a bug. Criticism of antisemitism is being silenced, and that is a tool of violence in and of itself.
If only somebody had said this was happening... Oh wait. We did. "Paranoid", they said. "Victim complex", they said. Do you think they'll even bother to pretend they've changed their minds, when the blood gets too thick to ignore? Or will they just say we deserved it?
Link to an article by BBC.
Both victims are alive and stable.
You said it excellently. Antisemitism, Jew hatred, is a feature, not a bug of this movement. It's misnamed. They don't actually care about Palestinians, otherwise they wouldn't celebrate when Israelis and Jews that actively worked on bettering their lives were murdered. They ignored Hamas's gunning down innocent lives, because they couldn't blame (((Israel.)))
People get duped, they come because they believe in the cause, and the Jew hatred gets ignored little by little, until they're faced by huge swaths of it, and the people that do speak up about it either get blasted out of their groups, or have to resort to using antisemitic rhetoric themselves to get people to attempt to start seeing why one specific phrasing is antisemitic.
Refuah shelayma.
“Jews and animals are not allowed”
This is a sign outside a hotel in Kyrgyzstan. It is 21 century.
Well this isn't reminiscent of anything concerning at all!
Didn't even try hiding behind "Zionists" this time. Good. Let them stop hiding it, and all the antisemites that claim they're not will start being honest.
This is a result of the inhumane decisions that members of this administration want you to be silent about in public for fear of a loss of “civility”.
The kid and her lawyer were about the only humans there. For fucks sake, they’re kids.
