Response to Plenary

Among all the plenaries we have this semester, my favorite one is the plenary that talks about art and power. I’ve seen some paintings and performs that aim at emphasizing feminism and women’s rights. However, in the plenary it is my first time to learn about women-directed movies. Comparing with other movies that only simply concentrate on feminism topics, I think the form of women-directed movies might have a greater power to inspire women to work on arts, in particular movies, and to express their ideas more bravely.

This is a hot spot of news in China recently. Li Yinhe, the interviewee, was famous for her identity of sexologist and the wife of late male novelist Wang Xiaobo in the last decade. However, she becomes a hot contentious people recently because of her new partner. Born with biological gender of female and identify himself as male, Knight, her new partner and a female-to-male transsexual, catches the eyesight of the society and brings a wide discussion. Because of Knight's identity, Li Yinhe also falls into the query on her sexual orientation. This report, through direct conversation with Li Yinhe, not only indicates her own opinion about gender role and identity, but also shows the situation and treatment of LQBTQ group in China in some degrees, which is worthy to think about.
