The Guangling Expeditions

Apropos of nothing, a repost of my article on Cao Pi's Guangling Expeditions.

In 224 and 225, Cao Pi personally led two expeditions from Guangling, hoping to cross the lower reaches of the Great River and attack Jianye. On both occasions, these plans never came to fruition. Did Jiang Ji did anything besides the first Battle of Hefei and helping Sima Yi in his coup?

Tons of stuff.

He served as steward of Yang for a while. It was during this time that he single-handedly save Hefei from Sun Quan in 209. After the first battle at Ruxu, he gave Cao Cao advice on how to settle the populace. Cao Cao didn’t take his advice, and things went badly for him. Later, when Jiang Ji was in Ye delivering reports, Cao Cao praised him for his good counsel and regretted not taking it. Some time after this, there was a false rumor that Jiang Ji was going to defect to Wu, but Cao Cao disregarded it.

Jiang Ji was soon transferred to Cao Cao’s staff, where he served as an adviser and was close with Sima Yi. In 219 he and Sima Yi helped Cao Cao ally with Sun Quan against Guan Yu.

Jiang Ji enjoyed great favor under Cao Pi. He served as his personal adjutant, then as a general. He was one of Cao Pi’s most trusted advisers and was known for his good judgment. During the Great River Campaign in 223, he was sent to assist Cao Ren as an adviser. Although the campaign was unsuccessful, Jiang Ji’s contributions were praised. Jiang Ji also served as Cao Pi’s adviser during his campaign against Sun Quan in 225, and he was praised for saving Wei’s stranded navy.

Under Cao Rui, Jiang Ji remained a trusted adviser. He saw through Zhou Fang’s ploy at Shiting, although by the time his warning reached Cao Xiu, Cao Xiu had figured it out for himself. He was known for his sound and opinionated advice, and Jiang Ji weighed in on all court matters and was usually proven correct in the end.

In 242, Jiang Ji replaced Man Chong as Grand Commandant, and he was known for speaking out against Cao Shuang’s regime. He was one of the most noteworthy partisans of the Sima family and assisted in Sima Yi’s coup against Cao Shuang. After Cao Shuang and his brothers were executed, Jiang Ji arranged for Cao Shuang’s nephew to be named as his heir so that Cao Zhen’s line would continue.

Jiang Ji passed away shortly after this.

He was very important, especially to Cao Pi and Cao Rui. He was one of the chief advisers in all of Cao Pi’s personal campaigns, and Cao Rui never did anything without consulting him. He opposed Cao Shuang’s regime and helped Sima Yi take power.

It’s also worth mentioning that early in his career, Jiang Ji’s superiors hated him because he was drunk all the time. One even set up a dummy labeled “Drunkard Jiang” and shot arrows at it to relieve stress.
