To call this a "tamer A Song of Ice and Fire" would be incredibly unfair. After all Feist's universe came first (the first book, Magician, was published in 1982. Whereas, ASoIaF was published in 1991), and should not suffer the pressure from a younger series. But reading Silverthorn (the second book in the Riftwar Trilogy), that is what my feelings were. It's not a bad feeling, for the most part. It's nice to know which characters are good, bad, and gray. And that they will most likely remain that way. It's nice that the major characters you're introduced to in the beginning are all still alive at the end (of this book, anyway). Despite there being so many serious fight scenes. The action sequences were fun to read. The banter between characters were entertaining. And the detail and thought put into this universe's magic systems are fascinating to witness. This latter one has always been my favorite part in any of the author, Raymond E. Feist's novels. But through it all, my favorite character, whose scenes are also my favorite to read and immerse myself in is the gray character, Jimmy the Hand. It's fun to follow the adventures of a boy thief while accompanied by a priest and a revolving door of interesting characters. My second favorite is the magician Pug, the title character in this trilogy's first book, whose exposure in this book is significantly reduced. That isn't to say that his role was reduced, though. He's still definitely a major player in this book. It's just that you see significantly see less of him, and that he has barely any true connection to this book's title conflict, the magical silverthorn.
