Let’s talk about progress!
For example, I have been defeated by the Rule of Thirds.
Let me reiterate: Let’s talk about failure. For some reason my mind can not wrap around the Rule of Thirds. I don’t understand it. I know I have to place the objects respectively into their third of the image (or on the intersecting points), and yet I can’t seem to do it! Well … let me explain. It is not that I cannot photograph images that count as following the rule of thirds, it is more like I don’t like any of my images that follow those rules. Maybe it is because I am caught up in too much of the big picture. I am surrounded by the hustle and bustle of city life, and I cannot seem to focus on capturing images in smaller context.
I have been focusing some research on photographers such as Jim Zuckerman and … well Jim Zuckerman. (Check out his portfolio here: http://www.jimzuckerman.com/photography-collection) Honestly, this man is insane! He has such a delicate balance and work of composition within each image that it seems impossible to recreate. I have been to many of the locations he has photographed and yet it seems as if I never once stepped foot in that country. I was mostly focusing on images that followed the … who would have guessed it … rule of thirds. It seems like he uses the available negative space in a delicate manner as to not upset the image. It is truly artistic.
Now, on to success; I adore lines of movement within photography. I adore the constant flow and ebb of the lines. Downtown I am surrounded by rows of cars, or skyscrapers, or train tracks. The Golden Spiral has also been putting my through a loop. I find some aspects of it refreshing and then I want to pull my hair out.
Moral of the Story: At this stage of the game, the Rule of Thirds is an enemy, not a friend.
