¹³⁰⁾ “i’ll stay while you sleep. nothing’s gonna happen while i’m here, okay?”
There was another crash of plates on the kitchen walls, Isaac jumping again as he looked up from his comic to the door. It was still closed, luckily, but that didn't stop the heavy hammer of his heart against his chest. Camden had been deployed two months ago and with his mother spending every other night in the hospital, his dad had been... difficult.
"Hey." Isaac whipped his head from the door to the window where Jackson was climbing in. The 13 year old pushed his glasses up his nose slightly, scrambling to his feet. "Did you finish that comic book yet? I want to read it before Danny."
Isaac motioned to the stack on his desk, trying not to say anything in case his voice trembled. Jackson was good at ignoring things if he didn't know they were there.
"They're letting 7th graders join lacrosse this year because apparently no one wants to play. Danny's going too, we could all get on the team together if you come?" Jackson had grabbed some of the comics now, flipping through them while he talked. "Mom says I can get contacts too so I don't have to keep wearing sports goggles with my glasses."
The sound of glass shattering filled the room again and Jackson looked up with wide eyes.
"Y-you can take the comics, Jaxie." Isaac said, keeping his voice as even as possible.
Jackson didn't move, his eyes never leaving the door. After another minute, he flopped down on the little beanbag chair Isaac had stolen from Camden. "It's boring in my room, I'll just read them here."
"Shut up, Iz. I’ll stay while you sleep." Jackson interrupted him and turned on the desk lamp. "Nothing’s gonna happen while I’m here, okay?"
Isaac nodded slowly, putting his comic to the side and curling up under the blanket. "If you get on the lacrosse team, don't get so popular you forget me."
"Yeah right, you're next door. I'd never forget you." Jackson teased, flipping through the comic book. The gentle sounds of his breathing lulling Isaac to sleep.
7th grade was going to be alright.
