Otabek had been training for this job since he was a child. His father led the royal guard until he died in battle several years ago, and ever since he could remember, he wanted to lead the royal guard, too. Which, surprisingly, wasn’t as hard for him as everyone thought. Some people claimed it was because his father was so great, that Otabek got special privileges, others said Otabek was just the best of the best, so it didn’t matter how old he was. Both theories were right, in their own capacity, but there was something everyone in the kingdom hadn’t taken into consideration.
King JJ.
Given the fact that they’d grown up around each other, JJ and Otabek were pretty close as children, but once he became a knight, Otabek had insisted that JJ treat him just as he would any other knight. That is, to say, if he did badly, he didn’t want to be rewarded for it. Maybe Otabek was just too hard on himself, but the way he quickly rose through the ranks seemed a little more than suspicious to him, but not enough that he ever mentioned it to the king.
He was still fairly new in the position, but he felt fairly confident in his abilities. Still, the pressure was on. Any wrongdoings would reflect back on him--and on JJ, in return.
One evening, Otabek walked into the throne room, kneeling down. “Your Majesty.” He said, “We just returned from up North this morning, and I have some updates for you, but...” He gave a small smile. “I hear congratulations are in order? You’re getting married?”
