The Jaguar 420 and its Daimler sibling the Sovereign were introduced at the October 1966, London Motorshow, to fill the wafer thin gap between the Jaguar S type and larger 420D (Mk.10) and were produced for just two years as a sports saloon Developed from the Jaguar S-Type, the 420 cost around £200 more than that model and effectively ended buyer interest in it, although the S-Type continued to be sold alongside the 420/Sovereign until the Jaguar ceased production in December 1968, while the Daimler remained in production until July 1969 The Daimler differed from the Jaguar 420, having the traditional Daimler fluted radiator surround and the interior was furnished with finest quality leather hide upholstery, polished figured walnut instrument panel and deep pile carpets that were sufficiently luxurious to satisfy Daimler's established clientele. The 420 and Sovereign differed from the S-Type in having a revised four-headlight nose reminiscent of the Jaguar Mk. X and were powered by a 4.2 litre version of the straight-six XK engine.
