Stylist picks – illustrator Jo Ley
Pick by Warhol’s Children’s Hannah Chapman
Jo Ley is another one of the Drawing Book’s illustrators. Some of her work is inspired by science fiction and tweets, and she draws lovely fantasy lands.
This beautiful blush-toned femme fatale illustration of Lana del Rey seems fitting, mirroring the way Lana’s super-team of promoters and industry buffs painted her as something classic and desirable; modern but playing on nostalgia for times of whalebone lingerie, red lipstick and hot curled hair Polished pinup girl aesthetic. Because no-one knew who Lana del Rey was when she was called Elizabeth Woolridge Grant and wore tshirts. I suppose all the images of pop starlets are created to an extent, but Lana del Rey seems especially illustrated. But gosh, she’s nice to look at.
