Ayase paused. Jo’s phone buzzed again, and a new message flashed across the tiny screen.
Plz come! it said. Well save ur song for teh end.
A little more of the tension sifted out of Ayase, like an unconscious exhale. She pictured Kiyoshi trying to text in the disco-lit darkness of a karaoke room.
Jo didn’t seem to notice. He poked his half-eaten food with his chopsticks, his phone ignored by his side.
“Look,” he said, the word strangely nervous. “Even if I’d been awake, I would’ve turned them down. I just fell asleep while I was...” He trailed off, his mouth tightening.
Ayase stared at him, but he didn’t continue. He ran a hand through his hair.
She knew that look on his face. It matched the twitching of his fingers, the faintly red scratch marks on the skin around his beard. She remembered the ashtray in the living room, overflowing with cigarette butts.
She slowly lowered her bowl, wiping a few grains of rice from her mouth.
“What, Jo?”
He took a long breath. “I was...waiting for you,” he murmured at last. “I need your opinion on something.”
Tokyo Ghosts started this month in Sparkler. It’s time for angsty college life, hoo baby yeah.
Awesome art by @tsulala (Rem)
Looks like the first Tokyo Ghosts story will be running in the November issue of Sparkler (instead of October), but @tsulala aka Rem has already started designing Ayase and Jo at age 20.
SUCH A DELIGHT. And yes, that’s a wedding ring. (But many of you already knew about that.)
The Kado/Ayase/Sachi fanstory contest is running in the meantime, and it closes October 21st. Win prizes and get an audio version of the winning story!
(For anyone who didn’t get the Kado orgasm joke, it’s from this story and yes he can actually do that with his power.)
These needed a masterpost. Campaign posters for, basically, “which Tokyo Demons boy would be best in your bed.” And the winner:

“Jo...” Ayase closed her eyes and breathed heavily into her pillow. “M-make sure somebody wakes me up the second we hear anything.”
He swallowed. “Right.”
“P-promise me.”
“I promise.”
She sighed, an edge of something unreadable at the end of it. “I trust you. But not...because you make it easy.”
Jo actually jerked back at that, his eyes widening. He wasn’t sure she’d ever even implied something that personal before. He realized, as he stared down at the groggy girl shifting in her bed, that he’d rarely heard her ever say a nice thing about him.
Then...why did it kill him when he felt like he was letting her down?
He took a long breath and rubbed his face, dropping to sit on the bed beside her. She stirred again, the soft press of her knees through the comforter brushing against his back.
“Ayase,” Jo whispered.
Ayase moaned dreamily. “Hm?”
He hesitated for a long moment. “I...I want to tell you something,” he breathed.
Oh snap, new chapter is out.
