Okay, thoughts on Coda.

Joan gave a man information on the bank, thus leading to the robbery. She tried to protect Morse and got her coworker killed and a gun held to her head for her trouble. She was used as leverage against her father and the police at large. Then, to top it off, she saw her father nearly kill a man who was already good and captured, out of anger, and say "This is who I am. Always has been."

Of course she ran away as fast and as far as she could. Right into the arms of a man who was everything her father would disapprove of, because what better way to avoid the overwhelming sense of failure, of fear, of betrayal? Of course she did.

What doesn't make sense is that when she found her way back, she would find any sort of safety in a man exactly like her father. Jim Strange? No. Not for my girl.

Joan insists, without allowing for any argument, that Morse choose her daughter's name. If he's going to raise her, then there's going to be something she can point to and say 'that's from my dad' even if it's not genetics. If she's not going to share his hair or freckles or eyes, at least she'll have the name he chose, because he wanted her. And that's how she ends up being named Verity. And I love that.

Joan grows to love that child. Until she's nearly two, she feels horribly guilty about how little she feels connected to her, but once Verity starts talking, that changes everything. Of course, Joan still works, and honestly, it makes sense that Verity is a bit of a Daddy's girl. Morse always has been more openly affectionate, had an easier connection. But Joan does develop a good, close relationship with her, especially as she gets older.

Verity Morse likes her dad's silly operas. She likes poetry and reading. And she likes football and, strangely, boxing. When she's little, she wants to grow up to be a racecar driver. She actually ends up pursuing a degree in mathematics.

Just a quick update: Joan Thursday is still my most special favoritist girl. I love her.

the only good thing about Ray is it's evidence of Joan's ability to handle Morse's shamestache.

Ah, fuck it. meet my girl Joan Thursday. She's my favorite precious angel. Also, she's a trainwreck.

She works for the welfare department helping out women and children who need it. She's an activist, and is a part of both feminist and civil rights protests. She's survived a bank robbery/hostage situation, been arrested at a peaceful protest, dated a married man, left that abusive relationship, and rejected a marriage proposal so devastatingly that the poor man never recovered. Pretty cool list of have-dones for a young woman in the late sixties.

I would die for her.
