Afro-Pop artist Jobaa is just getting started. The Nigerian native developed a keen interest in music at an early age and started making music in his early secondary school days. While attending Babock University he became a music sensation garnering a huge following with campus hits “Oloufe” and “Bad Belle” and working with Jinmi Abduls, Higo Music and Remy Baggins. In December 2019 he released a single called “Sweet Love” featuring Buju and most recently released a new single, “Olla”.
Amandah Opoku sat down with Jobaa to talk about his new single “Olla”, working with Buju, and his forthcoming EP!
Amandah Opoku: Jobaa, thank you for doing this interview today! Before we kick off please tell our readers about yourself and one random fact people do not know about you
Jobaa: Hi, thank you for having me…Well, I would say apart from the music, I am also a pretty good footballer too.
AO: What inspired you to pursue a music career? And why did you decide on creating Afro-Pop music?
Jobaa: I want to be heard and I feel the way to be heard is through music…Afropop/Afro-fusion music gives me the best avenue to express myself as an Artist.
AO: In University you released two singles which became hits on the campus and you also had the opportunity to work with Jinmi Abduls, Higo Music and Remy Baggins. What was it like working with these individuals and how did it prepare you for your career?
Jobaa: They are fantastic people and made things really easy for me too, so shout out to them! Every session was a great learning process, growth and self-discovery which has contributed immensely to my career and journey.
AO: You released your new single “Olla” last month. What was the inspiration for the song?
Jobaa: “Olla” is my first ever definition of versatility, I wasn’t that up-tempo Afrobeat/ Afropop type of artist and my team didn’t want me to boxed, so the production got switched up a bit and the inspiration just came based off a positive and energetic vibe in the studio. The lyrical content talks about how a guy brags about who he is, like a bad boy, rich boy and basically letting the girl know he really wants her.
AO: What was the writing and recording process like for “Olla”? Was it different compared to the process for your debut single “Sweet Love”?
Jobaa: The process and synergy with the producer and my team in the studio was just a great vibe during the Olla session and it was recorded in like an hour or less. “Sweet Love” with Buju was also an amazing process, though different, as at the time I wasn’t signed and as a young artist just wanted to record and put out content with really no form of direction really lol. But in all, I enjoyed the process and learnt a lot.
AO: Last year, you released your debut single “Sweet Love”, which was released last year. What was it like working with Buju? Did Buju offer you any advice as you pursue your music career?
Jobaa: With “Sweet Love” I would say it was me testing the waters to see the response, also you can notice the difference between “Sweet Love” and “Olla”, as my versatility was brought into play on “Olla”. So I personally see “Olla” more like my debut single than Sweet Love. Working with Buju was amazing and fun, though we didn’t necessarily speak on an advanced level, but still killed the song together regardless.
AO: As you continue to write and record new music, if you could collaborate with any artist, who would you choose and why?
Jobaa: I would say Wizkid, Davido, Simi, Adekunle Gold, Ms Banks, Kizz Daniel and Yemi Alade, as their vibe and delivery for me is extraordinarily lit!
AO: You're currently working on your debut EP which is expected to drop in 2021. What can fans expect to hear on the record?
Jobaa: Yes I am…They can expect the best of Afro-fusion and my absolute ability to show versatility.
AO: For new fans who come across your music, what would you like them to take away from your music?
Jobaa: Welcome to good music, I do this for them down to every record and they surely won’t be disappointed.
AO: With “Olla” out now, what can fans expect from you next?
Jobaa: The video for “Olla” drops real soon too, so they should anticipate that, also my next single is being scheduled for late October, so they have that to look forward to cos it bangs!
AO: Jobaa, thank you for sitting down with me! Before we close this interview is there anything you want to say to your fans and our readers?Jobaa: Again thank you for having me. Sure, I would like to thank the fans for the love and support first of all, as it’s important to show gratitude and appreciation.
