“ sorry. ” phone is soon slipped back into his pocket. he feels awkward, for sure, but it’s nice to be around people other than his own family. even if the romero’s seem just as tense around him as his own family. it’s understandable, things lately have been upsetting to say the least. and kevin hasn’t exactly felt like having a full on meal since the crash, has survived on occasional snacks when he occasionally had an appetite, but he wasn’t going to say no when lewis asked him to come over. even if he has been quiet, even if now that he’s sitting there, surrounded by lewis’ family, he feels like he barely belongs. they aren’t exactly putting on the front of a happy family with no problems going on, it’s clear the crash has them rattled, but they’re still so much more put together than his own family had ever been. the only thing he sees that’s the same is the awkward glances everyone keeps giving him, as if expecting him to break down any moment. and sure, he wants to break down, but he’s certainly not gonna do it in their house. so instead he just eats. stays quiet, shovels food down as if it’s the only thing he knows how to do. “ uhm.. my dad.. said to thank you guys for having me. ”

they’d 𝙱𝙰𝚁𝙴𝙻𝚈 managed to save him, kevin had barely pulled him away before weights 𝚂𝙻𝙰𝙼𝙼𝙴𝙳 together where his head had just been. she had managed to stay 𝙲𝙰𝙻𝙼 for a while, not wanting to break down in public, but then they're outside and shes crying and kevin is too busy talking to the coach about 𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃 𝙷𝙰𝙿𝙿𝙴𝙽𝙴𝙳 to notice. lewis' question surprises her; partly because the 𝙻𝙰𝚂𝚃 𝚃𝙸𝙼𝙴 he saw her freaking out was the roller coaster, where his response was 𝙻𝙴𝚂𝚂 𝚃𝙷𝙰𝙽 𝚂𝚄𝙿𝙿𝙾𝚁𝚃𝙸𝚅𝙴, and partly because it means he thinks there's a 𝙲𝙷𝙰𝙽𝙲𝙴 that she's sad that they saved him. words 𝙴𝚂𝙲𝙰𝙿𝙴 𝙷𝙴𝚁 in the moment, her reaction simply being to wrap her arms around him, head finding itself 𝚁𝙴𝚂𝚃𝙸𝙽𝙶 against his chest. and sure, she feels bad about crying all over his shirt, but shes pretty sure that with 𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁𝚈𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙷𝙰𝙿𝙿𝙴𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶 he wouldn’t mind. “ 𝙾𝙵 𝙲𝙾𝚄𝚁𝚂𝙴 they're happy. ” muffled into his chest, her head pulling back slightly so her words are easier to hear. “ I'm 𝚂𝙾 𝙷𝙰𝙿𝙿𝚈 you're okay. ”

there’s the slightest smile as she 𝚃𝚄𝚁𝙽𝚂 𝙰𝚆𝙰𝚈, head ducking down, trying to hide the smile as if it wasn’t 𝙰𝙿𝙿𝚁𝙾𝙿𝚁𝙸𝙰𝚃𝙴. “ you dont 𝙽𝙴𝙴𝙳 to thank me. ” she can understand 𝚆𝙷𝚈 he would want to, but she doesn’t think she 𝙳𝙴𝚂𝙴𝚁𝚅𝙴𝚂 it. sure, she got him off the coaster and then she and kevin had saved him 𝙰𝙶𝙰𝙸𝙽, but so many other people 𝙷𝙰𝙳𝙽'𝚃 been saved. so many people had 𝙳𝙸𝙴𝙳 𝙾𝙽 𝚆𝙴𝙽𝙳𝚈'𝚂 𝚆𝙰𝚃𝙲𝙷, and she couldnt pretend that their 𝙱𝙻𝙾𝙾𝙳 wasn’t on her hands. “ I mean.. it was 𝙺𝙴𝚅𝙸𝙽 that saved you, technically. ”

she 𝙺𝙽𝙾𝚆𝚂 he will, has no doubts about it. she didnt know lewis well before all this, but she knows that he cares about his friends. knows that hes big and hes 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙲𝚄𝙻𝙰𝚁 and hed be very good at protecting a person if it came down to it. no one in their right mind would mess with him.

“ isn’t that meant to be 𝙼𝚈 𝙹𝙾𝙱? ” spoken with the slightest smile, as if everything that was happening was some kind of 𝙸𝙽𝚂𝙸𝙳𝙴 𝙹𝙾𝙺𝙴. gaze is cast to the ground, the girl entirely aware that she needs the protection. her time is coming, and so far it seemed as though her attempts to save people weren’t overly successful. “ I think right now the only protection I need is from ian mckinley’s 𝙳𝙴𝙰𝚃𝙷 𝚂𝚃𝙰𝚁𝙴𝚂. ” she knows ian's loss was difficult, but ever since it happened it felt like his stare could burn holes through her. he blamed her, and she couldn’t blame him for that. she 𝙱𝙻𝙰𝙼𝙴𝙳 𝙷𝙴𝚁𝚂𝙴𝙻𝙵 too. “ right now our focus needs to be on the mystery kids and on kevin. we can worry about me 𝙻𝙰𝚃𝙴𝚁. ”
