Oscars Yes, these are the tank fish you may have in your aquarium and were intentionally released in the Everglades by aquarium owners looking to rid themselves of their pets. There are now billions if not trillions of these exotics in our freshwater canals essentially crowding out and eating native species. These fish can weigh up to 3-lbs though I would consider a big fish at pound and a half. These fish are scrappy fighters and will put a surprising bend in your rod. Think of an oversized bluegill on steroids. They eat anything so popping bugs work great as do Clouser minnows when flyfishing and beetle spins or small spinner baits are deadly in white or chartreuse green. I keep every one I catch and give them to the bucket fisherman at the ramp - it makes their day. Originally from South America they are sold in food markets and are good eating. Their flesh is a salmon orange but turns Whit when cooked. In the winter and spring months when water levels are at their lowest is when these fish crowd the canals of the Everglades. You can easily catch a 100 in a day. I landed 30-yesterday in just a little over two hours of fishing. They like to stay close to shore and hang around structure. Carey Chen (young and painting)
Jamaican born Carey Chen now lives in Florida and is quite prolific in his painting of game fish in their natural environment with very few fisherman or boats in his work. Save the spearfishing series most of his work is sans fisherman. His art could be classified in the Guy Harvey style but I feel Carey's work shows more vitality and vigor. Fantastical as his depictions may be he still maintains a high credibility of realism. You'll notice his work easily goes from the cobalt blues of the deep ocean where marlin and swordfish dwell to the greener shallower waters of the backcountry where tarpon, bonefish and snook live. I think Carey's art might have been the first outdoor fishing art that was printed on tile and I have one of his works of six tile panels depicting a school of feeding bonefish with a faux white coral frame. It is a fun piece and I never tire of seeing it and the enjoyment I get from it never fades. Carey's art work transfers well to T-shirts, hats, dinner plates, coffee cups and other crockery so it is art that you can fill your home and closet with.
Chet Reneson (still with us)
Chet Reneson really captures it for me. As a fishing and hunting watercolorist no one speaks to me like Chet does in his fishing scenes. I can actually imagine myself in is art like the Bahamas bonefishing scene featured here - Been there done that and will do it again. Though I have never met Chet I do have several of his signed prints hanging on my living room wall. I am forever fascinated with his cloudscapes and how he works his water colors when it comes to his flats fishing scenes. In a word they are spectacular. Much of his work concentrates on the Bahamas and a bit of yesteryear (1960's - 70's ?) with guide boats being small wooden skiffs which pretty much are no longer the norm in the Bahamas and certainly no longer exist in Florida. Chet's work almost reminds me of Winsolw Homer's art especially when it comes to their mutual fascination with the Bahamas. Chet, like Winslow, hasn't met a flat featurless horizon that he liked and you won't find an uninterrupted horizon in Chet's work either. His duck hunting depictions actually make me feel the biting cold and wind he portrays. The heat and the burning sun of his Bahamas is very real for me as well.
