Welcome to Urban Rookie. My name is Joe and I am an Urban Rookie. This blog is meant to me a place to share the trials, tribulations and triumphs of my new found urban experience. I knew from the get go that moving to Washington, DC from West Palm Beach, FL was going to be no easy adjustment.
I realized that I needed to create this site after a key event in my new found urban-ness, my first near death experience with a bicyclist. Moments after I asked my Twitter followers, "Who has the right of way, a pedestrian or a bicycle? #urbanrookie."
The best answer I recieved was from @MalnurturedSnay, in a two-part tweet he said "It depends (i.e., is the pedestrian crossing when s/he doesn't have signal, and biker moving with traffic?) but pedestrian has right of way over bicycle (i.e., ped in crosswalk, biker better stop)." Thats the moment I knew I had a lot to learn about traversing the pedestrian/bike/traffic/Secret Service filled streets of Washington, DC.
So sit back and read this blog on a bus, train, plane or in the back of a taxi cab. It is my hope to have guest bloggers, true urban masters, post here occasionally - like my friend who knows which car on the train to get on so it is most convenient to his exit - insane! If you have questions ask, if you want more information on something let me know and if you think you have something to contribute please chime in. We're all in this together.
